"The One You Never Forget"
(2020)
As fourteen-year-old Carey (London Curtis) prepares for his date to the school dance, his parents reminisce about their first dance together. They fondly recall their memories, but have always felt the one thing missing is a picture of them together on that special day. Carey’s mother (Tasha Smith) is about to head off to work, so she won’t be there to see her son with his date. She makes her husband (Charles Malik Whitfield) promise that he’ll get a picture of Carey and his date together before they leave for the dance.
It seems as if Carey’s parents are more excited about the dance than he is. When questioned about his date, Carey is quiet and reserved. His father wants to meet the lucky girl and snap the photo he promised his wife, but when he urges Carey to invite her inside, Carey declines and heads out the door. Carey hesitates and sighs, but when his date, Hunter, emerges from the car parked in the driveway wearing a pale blue suit and bowtie, a smile crosses his lips.
Carey’s father watches as Hunter pins a boutineer on Carey’s lapel. Surprised and confused, he finally rushes outside and stops Carey from getting in the car. Will Carey’s father capture the picture he promised his wife or will this be a moment he’d rather forget?
I Absolutely recommend "The One You Never Forget." Although the relationship between Carey’s parents was only a minor part of the film, it really captured my attention. I thought that Tasha Smith and Charles Malik Whitfield really had great chemistry and were not only believable as a married couple, but totally convincing of a couple who has truly been in love with each other for years. The way they held each other, looked in each other’s eyes, and how they playfully teased and complimented one other, they were the epitome of a couple in love. Gay, straight, and everything in between—we’re all entitled to that same emotional, deep, and passionate love.
May we all find the courage to be who we truly are and embrace our feelings like Carey and Hunter. And may we all experience the kind of love, devotion, and commitment that Carey’s parents shared. If you’re lucky enough to find your one true love—the one you’ll never forget—appreciate and cherish that person, nurture the love you share, and do everything you can to hold on to one another.
